George Mason came to Oriental from Beaufort County and built this bungalow style home from lumber he brought with him. He was known as an excellent carpenter who built skiffs and fished for a living. The home flooded several times and was finally raised above the high water mark after Hurricane Isabel. A childhood memory of a present day descendant is the aroma of sweet potatoes, his grandfather’s favorite cooking on a wood stove in the kitchen.
