This typical concrete building attests to the popularity of movies during the 1940s and 1950s. The Merritt family built it and named it the Mart Theater. Later, it was owned by the W.J. Smith family, who operated it seven days a week through the 1950s. There were two entrances and two seating areas during those racially segregated times. It is now the Pamlico County Civic and Cultural Center.
