Kite Boarding in Oriental, NC
Wiggin’s Point
Wiggin’s Point
If you think Oriental is just a haven for retirees with sailboats and crusty commercial fishermen it’s time to dust off ye ole thinking cap!
Consider this, from downtown, in less than 5 minutes, you can be on the water with a world class guide chasing Tarpon or Red Drum. You and your kite board could be sitting on a riverine beach catching southwesterly winds. You and your SUP could have slick calm flat water all to yourself. You and your motorcycle could be leaning into turns on isolated country roads or you and your bicycle could be sprinting for any of the dozens of highly coveted Strava KOMs.
AND at the end of the day you and your adventure pals could be back in town drinking an ice cold beer on the water at the Toucan Grill and Fresh Bar. This is why we like to think of Oriental as “The Adventure Capital of Pamlico County”.
Winds out of the southwest at 15-20 knots.
There have been issues between fishermen, land owners, and kiters in the past so please be mindful of this when other people are present. There’s a big river out there for kiters and fishermen have a limited resource. If fishermen are there or arrive while you’re kiting please be mindful of this as well as their lines.
If you pack it in, pack it out and take an extra bottle with you. Most times you’ll find the beach at Wiggin’s Point in clean and pristine condition. Nearly all the user are respectful of the resource and do a great job maintaining it. Debris does wash up onshore though so take a piece to the trash can located in the parking lot.
Special thanks to Chris Mojica for flying his drone to create this video!
If you need specific information about gear, conditions or are looking for someone to join you we recommend hitting up the Oriental Kiteboarding group on Facebook. If you’re in need of lessons, which if you’ve never been kiting you definitely need lessons, check out Blown Kiteboarding. You can contact them at their Facebook page or check out their website.
