Sweet Pea’s Cafe in downtown New Bern, NC
When Sweet Pea’s Cafe owner, Karen Miller came to North Carolina from New York, she was no stranger to the restaurant business.
Growing up in an Italian family who ran a restaurant and later running one herself for 22 years, Miller can operate her cafe with her eyes closed.
Sweet Pea’s owner Karen Miller stands alongside Monica Gibbs inside her downtown New Bern Cafe.
On one of downtown New Bern’s busiest streets, Sweet Pea’s Cafe has the atmosphere of a quaint, cozy village like cafe. The furniture, a country chic style, gives the essence that you are having coffee and muffins in the comfort of your own home.

There were customers on their laptops, some in groups, and others dining alone. Looking around it was not hard to notice that everyone looked, simply relaxed.
Meeting Karen Miller, we learn that she is very much hands on with her business. After shaking hands she makes sure we are accommodated by one of her baristas and rushes back to finish her roasted vegetables and watermelon salad.
We choose our selections which was very exciting for us and begin to sample our fancy delicacies when Karen whisks back in with a colorful dish full of vegetables and another dish with the most beautiful looking watermelon salad.
The hungry man breakfast Stromboli, the glazed donut bread pudding muffin, and two of her very rich specialty beverages, an almond joy and a mango mania smoothie.
Everything was just as it looked, absolutely delightful. Through a sit-down interview with Karen we learn that she bakes and prepares everything that is on display, caters, and was on her way after our meeting to deliver a wedding cake.
All of the reasons that Sweet Pea’s has been such a success the last two years its been in coastal NC are due to Miller’s hard work and passion for creating succulent and unique menu items.
The cutest bit of information we learned is that Sweet Pea is actually her dog, whom she refers to as her CEO. You get a glimpse of Sweet Pea in a lovely frame that sits by the ordering counter.
In the midst of all of the tourism, sometimes congested traffic, and filled parking spaces in downtown New Bern, is this lovely and very warm cafe.
Stop by 323 Middle Street in New Bern if you’re ever downtown or just looking for a place to chat over a homemade freshly baked dessert and hot beverage, but make sure you tell them that Monica and Zac sent you!
